When I traveled through Europe on the Danube River, our Viking cruise ship passed through a series of locks starting in Nuremberg, Germany and ending in Budapest, Hungary. It was so amazing. The walls of the locks practically hug the ship. So close, I reached out my hand from our cabin’s balcony and held my palm against the wall. The entire process of entering a lock, rising, and leaving takes 45 to 60 minutes, depending on boat traffic. Here’s a timelapse video I shot with my GoPro that condensed a journey through a lock.
